BEAR VALLEY SKI RESORT
Located approximately 30 miles above Arnold on Highway 4 this resort offers 1280 acres of downhill skiing, a 1900-foot vertical drop, and 25 miles of runs for everyone from beginner to expert. Two triple chairs, seven double chairs, and two handle tows are capable of handling 12,000 skiers per hour. The 82 different runs can be broken down into 30% beginners, 40% intermediate, and 30% expert with the longest run being 3 miles.

We urge you, while visiting National Forests to take pride in treating your public lands gently and leaving no trace of your visit behind. It will insure that future visitors will continue to find these public treasures beautiful and unspoiled.

COTTAGE SPRINGS
Located approximately 12 miles above Arnold on Highway 4 this resort offers Skiing, Snowboarding, and a separate area for "Tubing". Tubing is only available to Cottage Springs Tube Rentals. Also Night Skiing on weekends and holidays. Call 209-795-1209 for more information.

SNOWMOBILE-LAKE ALPINE/EBBETTS PASS

Only 3 miles above Bear Valley is one of California's premiere snowmobile recreation areas. Hwy 4 from Lake Alpine to Highland Lakes turn off and beyond is snow covered and groomed during the winter months for snowmobiling. A "Snow Park" permit must be obtained for parking and is available in Bear Valley. For Snowmobile Rentals call 209-753-2323.

SWIMMING
There are quite a few lakes and streams that are open to public use such as White Pines Lake; The Stanislaus River (If you enter thru the Calaveras Big Trees State Park there is a fee required); Lake Alpine (A little cold in early summer); Sourgrass (the Stanislaus River). The general public may also pay a nominal fee to gain access to the pool at the Fitness Club (209-795-4077) in Arnold. NOTE: There are several lakes and pools which are part of private homeowners associations and clubs which do not allow non-member use. Please check before using any pools or lakes.

FISHING

SPICER RESERVOIR
Located 8 miles south of Hwy 4 above Big Meadows Campground, this reservoir covers 2,000 acres at full pool. Good fishing in July and August from shore or small boats (Note: a 10 MPH speed limit is enforced on the main body of the reservoir with the eastern "arm" closed to motorized boating). Boat launch and facilities for family and group camping are also available.

LAKE ALPINE
Located approximately 30 miles above Arnold, 180 acres with depths averaging 40 feet. Good for July and August fishing when trout are sluggish at lower elevations due to summer temperatures. Small boats are allowed, check with Forest Service first. Good fishing both from the bank and trolling. The Lodge at Lake Alpine should be able to give you some helpful tips on preferred spots and bait.

MOSQUITO LAKES
On Highway 4 approximately 36 miles above Arnold, two small lakes are stocked regularly during the summer months.

MOKELUMNE RIVER
On Highway 4 approximately 15 miles past Lake Alpine at Hermit Valley. Good fishing early in season when water is high, camping available.

STANISLAUS RIVER
Turn off Highway 4 at Boards Crossing Road across from the Dorrington Hotel, approximately 3 miles to the river. Camping available, swimming, good "push off" place for back packing trips up river. Exercise caution in early season when water is fast and high!

BEAVER CREEK

From Stanislaus River (above): Cross bridge on Boards Crossing Road, go approximately 7 miles, follow signs, very good early season fishing, camping available.

GRISWOLD CREEK

Continue on from Beaver Creek (above) approximately 6 miles, good fishing downstream, camping available.

WHITE PINES LAKE
One mile from Arnold at the edge of White Pines across from the Moose Lodge. Well stocked with Trout, some Bass and Catfish. Picnic Area, Swimming Area, no motorized boats allowed.The lake is private but all can fish. Good place for kids to fish. No overnight camping or campfires allowed.

SOUTH-FORK MOKELUMNE RIVER
Go past White Pines Lake (above), make a right turn just after crossing creek (small fish in creek), stay on main logging road for approximately 8 to 10 miles. Fishing usually good in spring, rough walking away from crossing, some camping available.

STANISLAUS RIVER & BEAVER CREEK- BIG TREES STATE PARK

Enter thru The Calaveras Big Trees State Park (The park will charge you a nominal fee) approximately 3 miles above Arnold. Good road approximately 7 to 8 miles to the river. Heavily stocked, also heavily fished. (Exercise caution in early season when water is high!) Beaver Creek is in the South Grove of the park past the bridge, good fishing in early season when water is high in main river.

The Stanislaus National Forest - Calaveras Ranger District has extensive brochures indicating areas, maps, rules, safety tips, and much more. Please call the Calaveras Ranger District at 209-795-1381.

BIKING
Bear Valley Mountain Bikes 209-753-2834. Also contact the Calaveras Ranger District for map of trails, etc.

BOATING

Lake New Melones is located outside of Angels Camp and is the fifth largest man made lake in California with Approximately 110 miles of shore line and offers recreation of all kinds. For information about rentals of houseboats, fishing boats, etc contact Lake New Melones Marina 209-785-3300.

GOLF
There are three golf courses in the area. Two are open to the public, one is part of a private country club. Meadowmont Golf Course 209-795-1313, Forest Meadows Golf Course 209-728-3439, and Sequoia Woods Country Club 209-795-2141.
